Daniel Mungall Jr.
Daniel Mungall Jr. passed away March 18th at the age of 97. Well into his 90's, he continued to sing with the Orpheus Club of Philadelphia, ski with his grandchildren, draft legal memoranda, and play golf, always hoping to shoot his age. Dan was born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 26, 1916. He spent his youth in Nutley, New Jersey in an area called The Enclosure, a cul-de-sac where artists' studios and music rooms were built into the houses. From an early age, his family and the surrounding community of closely-knit neighbors gathered to sing, play the piano, and make music. Dan graduated from Yale College with a degree in Economics in 1937 and then earned his law degree at Harvard Law School, taking a class with the then famous Edward "Bull" Warren. He was hired at Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young, LLP in 1940 as a young man working along side the firm's original lawyers. When the nation went to war, Dan volunteered. Despite being 6'7", the Navy informed him he was 6'2" and that he was needed as the gunnery officer on the Liberty Ship S.S. Elihu Yale. So began his service as a Lieutenant (junior grade) on several liberty ships during WWII. After the war, Dan became the 10th partner at Stradley. He was a member of the International Association of Defense Council and chaired the Fidelity & Surety Committee of the American Bar Association from 1982 to 1983. He served as Associate Reporter for the Restatement of the Law (Third) Suretyship and Guaranty, published by the American Law Institute. For over fifty years he represented Sureties and retired from the firm in 1986. Dan joined the Orpheus Club in 1942 and was president from 1974 to 1976. He missed only two concerts during his sixty eight years as a singing member and in the club's history his membership was the longest. This group of singers and his love of music sustained him with friendships and songs throughout his life. He sang in five quartets, all of which he helped to create. In 1944, he married Jean B. Mungall (Bryn Mawr '44), died 1955. In 1956, he married Edith D. S. Mungall. During their 54 years of marriage, they lived in Radnor, PA and were involved in many Philadelphia area organizations including Sunnybrook Golf Club, Aronimink Golf Club (president from 1954-1955) and the Merion Cricket Club. Dan was past chairman of The Radnor Township Civic Association and president of The United Cerebral Palsy Association of Delaware County. Dan is survived by his children and their families: Daughter Barbara J. Mungall - her husband Jan Pethick, grandchildren Marian Smith and Winslow Smith and their father Frank Smith; Daughter Nancy M. McDowell - her husband Peter, grandchildren Tyler and Julia; Daughter Joanne D. Mungall and grandson Cameron; Son Stephen B. Mungall - his wife Linda, grandchildren Megan, Brooke and Hope; his sister Alice M. Porter and cousin Helen F. Pendergrast. Daniel was a gentle, intelligent and honest man who will be surely missed. A service will be held March 30th, 3PM, Main Line Unitarian Church, Devon, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: The Settlement Music School, P.O. Box 63966, Philadelphia, PA 19147
A Brief History of the NBCA
The National Bond Claims Association traces its lineage back to the
early 1970’s. Bob Wavrek, then the bond claims manager for Westfield
Insurance Company – Ohio Farmers Insurance Company, and Richard
McGhee, the head of Westfield’s bond underwriting department,
conceived the idea of an annual social gathering for a small group
of company representatives.
In 1974, the original group decided to formalize their meeting which
was officially named the Westfield Bond Claim Open and Seminar. The
initial seminar was held at Westfield’s campus in October 1974 and
was limited strictly to company representatives. The program was
chaired by Paul McNamara, Esq. and featured presentations by John
Petro, Bernie Balkin and Charlie Ackerman.
In 1975 the invitation list was expanded and more company
representatives attended. Each year thereafter, the event became
larger as attorneys and consultants were also invited to attend.
Eventually, as the meeting grew in reputation and size, a core
group of members, led by our departed but still beloved friend, John
Mercogliano, decided to form a national organization, hence the name
change to the National Bond Claims Association. The affairs of the
NBCA are directed by a Board of Directors that includes twelve of
the most senior claims representatives of major bonding companies in
the United States. Our current membership includes approximately
350 individuals who work in the fidelity and surety bond industry.
Although the organization has enjoyed great success and growth over
the years, the objective of fostering a fraternity of bonding
industry colleagues remains our goal. The Board members strongly
believe that an organization dedicated to the goals of shared
knowledge and the development of professional camaraderie benefits
all who work in our industry.
The Board thanks John Petro for his detailed history of the origins
of the Westfield/NBCA.
Helping Children and Families in Need*
The NBCA has developed a tradition of donations to various charities that benefit children and families in need. The donations are funded from the Memorial Golf Tournament held on Wednesday of the program week and by donations from individual members. Since starting this tradition $2000,000 has been donated. To see a list of recipients of these donations, please Click Here.
* The National Bond Claims Association is not a charitable organization therefore,
donations/fees to it are not tax deductible as charitable donations.
Scholarship Information
In an effort to increase company membership and encourage younger individuals of the industry to become members of the NBCA, a scholarship program has been established. The scholarship will cover the cost of accommodations and program meals during the annual seminar. A travel allowance of $300.00 will also be included. Any member of the NBCA can nominate an individual; however, the nominee must be an individual employed by a surety in some sort of claims capacity. To submit a nomination, please Click Here.
